I see the personality of these little guys and try to capture
it. These are not studies of wildlife; they are portraits
of nervous, timid creatures. Though it takes time, patience
and food, I am able to relate to these little characters and
catch their fleeting expressions.
Most of the time they are running around and eating. Everyone
has seen pictures of squirrels sitting up and munching on
whatever they found. If they see you they usually run. What
I try to capture is the tiny moments when they look at me
and wonder what I am up to. They can flash these great little
expressions, that moment of curiosity when they decide whether
I am a threat or their new best friend who brought lunch.
Why squirrels? I have photographed birds, wolves and many
other animals, but I find squirrels to be the most challenging.
They are so common, most people dont even see them except
when they run across the path or dig up the yard. To capture
such expressive portraits of these fast moving creatures brings
me joy. Most of the time, I dont even see the expressions
myself, I just know what they are thinking and when the look
is going to be there then catch it in the fraction
of a second the shutter is open.
I hope you enjoy looking at my work and earn a little appreciation
for the life of a squirrel. They are great little critters,
once you get to know them. Oh, and bring some food with you.
